이번 작업은 내가 회화를 시작했을 때 그리고자 했던 그림의 목표점과 맞닿아 있다. 그래서 조금 더 애틋하다. 10년의 시간을 독일 라이프치히 작업실에서 보냈지만, 이 작품을 하기 위해서는 한국에 와야 했다. 한국인으로 내가 가지고 있는 내면의 이미지를 캔버스에 담기 위해서인데, 연어가 산란을 위해 태어난 강으로 거슬러 올라가는 것과 같다고 생각하면 될 것 같다. 몸속에 녹아 있는 내 근원을 찾아 가는 긴 여정에는 10여 년의 시간이 걸렸다. 인간은 자연의 한 일부라는 것에는 대부분 공감하리라 생각한다. 내가 태어난 곳에는 산과 강 그리고 뚜렷한 사계절이 있고 바다도 있다. 그래서일까 자연은 내 그림에서 아주 중요한 부분을 차지한다. 물론 우리네 선조들도 자연을 늘 가까이했었고, 그것은 아주 오래된 우리의 DNA다.

화면에 그려진 자연풍경은 상상화다. 전통적 그리기 방법 중에 하나이며, 그것을 배우지는 않았지만 나에게는 자연스러운 것이었다. 그림에는 몇 가지 요소가 있는데 우리네 전통은 서양과는 많이 다르다. 그중에 눈에 보이는 것보다 보이지 않는 기운을 강조했다. 나는 보이는 것보다 보이지 않는 것을 마음의 눈으로 보려고 한다. 이런 내 욕구가 어디에서 왔을까 생각해 본다. 배우지 않아도 스스로 깨닫고 알게 되는 것이 있다고 나는 믿는다. 몇 번을 생각해도 내게는 풀 수 없는 신비 중 하나다. 예를 들어 바다거북은 알을 뭍에 낳고 알들은 모두 같은 날 깨어나 모두 바다를 향해 간다. 같은 날 태어나는 것은 포식자로 하여금 살아남을 확률을 높이는 것이고, 곁에서 바다의 방향을 가르쳐주는 어미가 없어도 그들은 모두 바다로 향한다.

이번 시리즈는 기존의 <심상心象시리즈>의 일부이고 “풍광산수화(風光山水花)”라고 소제목을 붙였다. 요즘은 물질뿐만 아니라 감정도 사라지는 것이 아니라 흩어지는것이아닐까란생각이든다. 각자마음속에흩어져있는감정과기억의 조각들이 작품을 통해 긍정에너지로 삶에 작용하는 계기가 되기를 바라본다.

Artist Statement of Kwon Doohyoun

This work reaches a point in painting that I wanted to achieve when I first started painting. So, it holds a place in my heart. After spending 10 years in the Leipzig workshop in Germany, I had to return to Korea to work on this project. This was to place the inner images that I have as a Korean onto the canvas. I was like the salmon going upstream back to its birthplace to spawn. It took about 10 years to discover the essence that was dissolved in my body. I think most of us would agree that humans are a part of nature. My birthplace has mountains, rivers, four distinct seasons, and the sea. Perhaps this is why nature is a very important part of my painting. Of course, our ancestors too have always been close to nature. It has been intertwined into our DNA since time immemorial.

The landscapes depicted on the canvases are imaginations. I use one of the traditional methods of painting, and although I did not learn it, it came naturally to me. There are several elements in painting, and our tradition is quite different from the West. Among them, I placed emphasis on the invisible energy rather than the visible. I try to see the invisible, rather than the visible, with the mind’s eye. I wonder where this desire comes from. I believe there are things that you can realize and know for yourself even without being taught. No matter how many times I mull over it, this is one of the mysteries that I cannot fathom. For example, sea turtles lay their eggs on land, the eggs all hatch the same day, and all of the young turtles head towards the sea. Being born the same day increases the chances of survival from predators. They all head to the sea even without a mother to teach them the direction they should go.

As part of the former series <Own Image>, this series is subtitled “Pung_Gwang San_Su_Hwa”. These days, I often think that not only things but also our emotions do not disappear but simply scatter. I hope that through this exhibition, the pieces of emotions and memories scattered in the mind of each of us will act as a positive energy in life.
